Tell the truth

December 27, 2023 By Stephen Cooper Leave a Comment

It seems more and more in our world today, many people have a hard time telling the truth. In fact, telling lies has become a part of the everyday life of many people, including Christians. Some discount small lies or white lies being ok.
Around Christmas time when our focus should clearly be on the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, many homes allow a small lie to creep into their homes taking away from the true meaning of Christmas. What does the Bible say about lies? If we are truly devoted to following Jesus Christ shouldn’t we be devoted to the truth and devoted to telling the truth, especially to our children and families?
In Proverbs 6:16-19, the Bible gives us a list of things that God hates. One of the things listed on God’s list is a lying tongue. So one question that we can ask ourselves before we make the practice of lying is, do I really want to make something that my God hates a part of my life.
Living a life full of lies can be devastating to yourself and others.

Proverbs 26:28 says A lying tongue hates its victims,
and flattering words cause ruin.

To lie to others is actually to show hate towards them.
We may think that the lie is all in fun, to make a situation more believable or exciting but according to God’s own Word, a lie is not the way to honor Him at Christmas time or any other time in our lives.

Proverbs 12:22 The Lord detests lying lips,
but he delights in those who tell the truth.

Lying should not be a part of the Christian’s lifestyle. We should avoid it all costs, yet for some reason we think that it is OK in small doses.

In John 8:42-44, Jesus is speaking of telling the truth. He also points out where lies originate from.

42 Jesus told them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, because I have come to you from God. I am not here on my own, but he sent me. 43 Why can’t you understand what I am saying? It’s because you can’t even hear me! 44 For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.

We should be about developing the character that is consistent with our Fathers character. If we claim to be a follower of Jesus Christ, we should not make lies a part of our character.

Christmas time is a time to reflect on the miracle of God. Providing a way for all mankind to have freedom from sins through Jesus Christ. A celebration of His birth!

Jesus wants us to be truthful. He tells us that freedom is found in the truth. John 8:32 – 32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Sometimes the truth hurts but the damage of a lie, even a small one, hurts more in the long run.

God’s Word has much to say about being truthful.

Start making a practice of telling the truth at all costs.

Because HE Lives,
Pastor Steve
